Torquato Tasso
Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), born in Sorrento, was an Italian poet known worldwide for having written the heroic poem Gerusalemme liberata. His life was full of ups and downs and not absent of contradictions, which can be explained by the mental disorders he suffered: he passed from the courts to the prison, from a poet of the Counter-Reformation to self-denunciation to the Inquisition.
Whatever his life was, today Tasso is remembered as one of the most renowned poets in the Italian language. In addition to his great work, the Sorrentine artist wrote others, among which Aminta, Re Torrismondo and Discorsi are the most famous.
